IT WAS BROAD daylight. Grasping the struggling man by his elbows, Michael put his knee in the man’s back and pressed him into the tarmac, breaking the man’s glasses.
“Why did you kill her? Why?”
Underneath the roar of a jet taking off on the occupied side of the Parisian airport Michael thought he heard the man say, “Because she had it coming.”
“Wrong answer,” Michael yelled, “let me be more specific—as he pulled the man’s arms up and pushed them forward, the man squealed—who ordered you to kill her?”
“I don’t know,” the man yelled.
“Wrong answer.”
